Bonfire is an audiovisual installation by Christopher Bauder at DARK MATTER Berlin. The work reinterprets the fireplace as a contemporary digital gathering point, using simulated flame, light and sound to create a place of shared attention.
The installation evokes the familiar feeling of sitting together around a fire under an open sky. DARK MATTER describes the work as a technological simulation of an archaic institution: the bonfire. Its 5-metre-high, three-dimensional arrangement of 162 light objects contains more than 20,000 individually controllable light points.

Music and sound design create a calm center around the digital flame. The sound does not dramatize the installation; it supports its quiet presence and the memory of collective experiences in and with nature.
Our contribution focused on music and sound design. Within the installation, sound helps hold the simulated fire as a contemplative gathering point while reflecting on the relationship between digital life, nature and technological reconstruction.
