MARIONETTE is an immersive installation by Sven Sauer and us exploring manipulated truth, deepfakes and the instability of perceived reality. Combining a tent-like environment, simulated lightning and immersive sound, the work creates a perceptual space suspended between shelter, uncertainty and geopolitical tension.
The installation’s lightning simulations are based on rocket detonation tracking data from February 22, 2022. Sudden flashes of light repeatedly interrupt the darkened environment and destabilize the perception of what is real, artificial or manipulated. The work creates a contrast between the apparent safety of the enclosed space and the violence referenced through the underlying data.
We developed the piano composition and spatial sound environment for the installation. A continuous thunderstorm soundscape accompanies the changing light behaviour and reinforces the installation’s immersive atmosphere. Sound supports the emotional tension of the environment while drawing visitors deeper into its fragile and uncertain perceptual world.
Our contribution focused on composition and spatial sound design. Marionette explores how immersive sound can shape emotional perception within installations dealing with uncertainty, manipulation and mediated reality.
