A Sonic Journey Through the Universe is an immersive surround-sound performance presented at TED2024. Experienced entirely through sound, the work guided audiences through different listening worlds while transforming the TED stage into an immersive spatial audio environment.
The performance translated atmospheres, perspectives and sonic ideas from KLONG’s broader body of work into a newly composed listening journey. Moving underwater, beneath the soil, into the air and out into space, the composition continuously shifted between different scales, environments and modes of perception.
Audiences experienced the work with their eyes closed inside a surround-sound environment, the first ever presented on the TED stage. Sound alone became the narrative and spatial structure of the performance, shaping movement, depth and emotional progression without relying on visual imagery.
Our contribution included concept development, composition and surround-sound design. The project was created as an invitation to listen differently, using immersive sound to guide audiences through hidden worlds normally beyond direct perception.
