BIG PRINTER is an interactive installation about digital surveillance and the persistence of data. Printer mechanics, shredded images, and distorted speech form a cold generative sound environment inside a container-based setting.
Our Role Concept, Production, Sound design, Music Composition & Production, Scenography, Mix & Master, On-site Implementation // Commissioned by Goethe Institut Breslau // Concept, Production, Programming schnellebuntebilder // Year 2016
BIG PRINTER was created in collaboration with schnellebuntebilder for the Goethe-Institut Pop Up Pavilion in Breslau in 2016. The installation reflects on surveillance, digital storage, and the illusion of deletion within contemporary networked systems.
The container functions as a physical representation of the digital realm: visible from the outside yet opaque in its internal operations. Visitors approaching the structure are captured by a camera system without active consent. Their photographs are printed immediately and mechanically shredded, turning invisible digital processes into visible physical actions.
The sound design follows this logic closely. We created a generative composition from amplified and modulated printer noises, extending the acoustic presence of the machine itself. Distorted fragments of human speech introduce an additional human layer that remains fragmented and unstable throughout the installation.
The resulting soundscape remains cold, mechanical, and emotionally restrained, reinforcing the installation’s focus on automated recording, storage, and erasure. Our contribution included concept development, sound design, music composition and production, scenography, mix and master, and on-site implementation.
