At Skagen’s Grey Lighthouse, scientific research on bird migration unfolds through exhibition sound design, music composition, and multichannel field recordings shaped by the coastal soundscape of northern Denmark.

Center of Migratory Birds is an exhibition at Skagen’s Grey Lighthouse dedicated to bird migration, scientific research, and the surrounding coastal habitat. Located at the northern tip of Denmark, the lighthouse functions both as a research center and as a public exhibition space focused on migratory patterns and environmental observation.

The project combines exhibition sound design, music composition, and environmental recordings to create an acoustic layer throughout the museum. In addition to the main exhibition spaces, a separate soundscape composition was developed for the entrance hall of the lighthouse tower, extending the sonic identity into the architecture itself.

To develop the project, we investigated Skagen’s acoustic environment through extensive field recording sessions and interviews with local residents. The recordings capture coastal wind conditions, environmental textures, and the atmosphere surrounding the migration routes. Experimental recording techniques included aerial audio captured with a helium balloon to explore perspectives connected to bird movement and spatial listening.

Our work included the sound concept, original music composition for the museum, exhibition sound design, recording production, mix and master, and the on-site implementation of the final audio environment.

PROJECT SCOPE
  • Role of Sound
Sound structures the exhibition through music composition, field recordings, and sound design integrated across exhibits and architectural spaces.
  • Mode of Encounter
Visitors move through the exhibition while hearing changing acoustic layers connected to migration, coastal weather, scientific observation, and local atmosphere.
  • Sound Logic
Composed musical themes, environmental recordings, and localized sound compositions create continuity between exhibition sections and the lighthouse architecture.
  • Source Material
The project draws on field recordings from Skagen, interviews with local residents, coastal environmental sounds, and experimental bird’s-eye recordings captured with a helium balloon.
  • Production Role
We developed the sound concept, music composition, sound design, production, mix, master, and on-site implementation.
  • Sound System
The exhibition combines multichannel field recordings, interactive exhibit audio, and a dedicated soundscape composition for the lighthouse tower entrance hall.
